The national headquarters for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and museum will remain aboard the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, SC. The national headquarters works tirelessly to preserve the legacy of the Medal of Honor by maintaining historical archives in its museum and partnering with groups and organizations nationwide to inform and educate the American public.
The museum uses interactive exhibits to tell the story of the 3,507 recipients awarded the Medal of Honor. Historical archives in the museum are meticulously maintained and select items are available for loan to local museums across the United States.
“We support any organization that desires to highlight the Medal of Honor recipients, especially the 71 living Recipients, and the legacy of the Medal of Honor. We assist in many ways – through character development programs in schools nationwide and outreach programs with our Recipients into the veteran and military communities. There can never be too many locations honoring the Medal of Honor,” said Drew D. Dix, Medal of Honor Recipient and President of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
The Congressional Medal of Honor Society established its headquarters aboard the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in 1999. The location was designated by the U.S. Congress as an official Medal of Honor site, along with Indianapolis, and Riverside, California. Additionally, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society created the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation to provide financial support to perpetuate the legacy of the Medal of Honor. This foundation is the only organization authorized by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to carry its name and seal.
The Congressional Medal of Honor Society was chartered by the Congress in 1958 to inspire Americans about the values embodied in the Medal of Honor: courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity, citizenship and patriotism. Its membership consists exclusively of those individuals who have received the Medal of Honor. Currently, there are 71 living recipients of the Medal of Honor.
